Visual Storytelling Assignments

These stories focus on changing a photo using some kind of photo editing tools.

You must list the assignment number on the blog post.

Every story must be at least 3-5 paragraphs long, each with 3-5 sentences and an intro, body, and conclusion. It is a story, whether educational, fictional, nonfictional, or documentary, but the story must support the digital media you created.

Your story must contain links, videos, and/or sounds that help the reader learn more about whatever you are talking about, that is what makes it digital.

  1. Color Splash: Change a photo to highlight one color that makes it stand out more than anything else.
  2. Multiply Yourself: Take two or more photographs of yourself on one location. You must not change the position of the camera and take care that the light does not change either. Use a photo editing software to arrange yourself two or more times on the same location. You may use masks and layers or simply the selection tool and the paste command. It may be helpful if you have already experience with photo editing.
  3. Then and Now: Edit a childhood photo of yourself to include a more recent photo of you in a pose that makes it look like you were part of the original scene. Pay attention to matching pose, detail, shadows, and color values to match the original. You can go back to your past, at least in your own edited photo! Based an example of Before and After Pictures with a Twist spotted in Buzzfeed. See also more exquisite examples in Woman Photoshops Present-Day Self into Childhood Photos.

Here are some reasons why the four seasons are so cool in . As a geography teacher, I love teaching about the geographical extent, latitude, continental climate, influence of oceans, polar jet streams, hemispheres etc… This visual assignment is a powerful way to demonstrate the 4 seasons.
  35. Who Said What: Find a picture of any secret agent you would like, preferrably a fairly well-known one. Next, pick a quote from a similar secret agent character. Finally, attribute said quote to a third similar character. You want the characters you chose to be well-known but also similar enough that people would confuse them with one another.
  36. Cipher Typography Photo Images: Using the concepts of typography and silhouetted images, create a set of two visuals using only letters of the alphabet in different letter sizes and colors. In cryptology, ciphers like “asdfghjk” can be decoded as messages like “password”. Therefore, create two dual visuals of the same image – one with the cipher gibberish, and one with a decoded message! This can be done either as a digital image collage or using newspapers/other resources to form the visual photos. Additional improvisation is welcomed – underlay a photo under your cipher typographic images, etcetera!
  37. Real-life 8-bit Art: 8-bit art is all the rage right now, and what is so compelling about it is that it’s all around us. Find or create 8-bit art in your real-world environment and photograph it so that you can share it here and actually get credit! Free yourself of the prison that is your computer, find 8-bit art in nature and release your inner-hippie. You must show before and after and a link to what you used.
